Discover Janaki Chechi

My aunt's family used to be radio worshipers. Particularly, the pocket radio from Philips which used to retail under Rs.100 in the late 80s. In order to avoid the clash of - Is it going to be 'All India Radio - Trichy' or 'Madurai' or 'Chennai Vanoli Nilayam' for the prime time show, each of them had their own and used to get drowned in their own world. One of them was a walking encyclopedia of the entire discography of Tamil cinema. Be it the songs of MSV or KVM or Raaja or V Kumar or Sankar Ganesh or whoever it is, You tell her the song name and she used to give you the entire history of it faster than a Google search ! Its through her I came to know of this song called "Neer Veezhchi Thee Mootudhae" from the movie "Kanne Kalaimaane". I used to think thats a original Tamil number composed by Raaja and used to take pride of being privy to such a high class number. Even in my Coimbatore college days, probably only 1 out of 10 knew this song, least realizing the fact that just across the border a few kilometers away, The original version of this song is akin to National anthem. "Thumbi Vaa" from Olangal was and is a mega hit in Kerala.

That song is a odd man out. It gained its fair share of reputation all across the country due to its recent incarnations in "Live In Italy" and "Paa". But there are many more 'its-a-crime-to-miss-this-song' from other languages which people from other states are not aware of. Since its been a while I touched upon Vicky's Virtual Playlists, I thought this time I will take up some of my Malayalam solo favorites of S.Janaki.

Like in other languages, Janaki was the first choice for Raaja's Malayalam songs especially in his early days. Majority of these songs are between 1977 to 1985. Its not a co-incidence that she didn't sing much for Raaja after this in Malayalam. (Chitra was found there after ! She had an edge probably hailing from the state) Another interesting aspect is that some of these songs are for a Balu Mahendra Movie. Hence they standout in terms of quality due to their astounding chemistry. Some of these songs are popular in Tamil as well while the truth is they are originally composed for Malayalam movies first.

So Discover Janaki Chechi !

1. Poovadikalil - Vyamoham
The year is 1977.. A very pleasing light music song with focus on lyrics and melody with not much attention on Orchestration.. Atypical of Raaja, even for those times. Probably it was the compulsion from the producer to give a song sounding like contemporary Hindi music of that time. Even then this serves an indication of Raaja's viswaroopam to come in terms of melodic beauty. I believe the KJ-SJ duet version of this song is actually more popular. This solo version by Janaki is relatively rare.

2. Paalaruvi Paadivaru - Dooram Arike (1980)
Listen to the prelude humming and its obvious this is a folk song. And soon after that listen to the Swing Waltz of Rhythm Guitar and Bass combo in the prelude. If that doesn't leave you dumb, note the seamless shift back to the Folk rhythm of the main song.

3. Tanal Virikkan - Aalolam (1982)
In my personal opinion this is the best Chakaravagam by Raaja. Its obvious why Raaja holds Janaki in high esteem if you listen to such songs. Its very difficult to drip emotions when the song is technically challenging and probably Janaki is one of the best in the business who can do it like second nature.

4. Veene Veene - Aalolam (1982)
Beautiful song. It was reused later as 'Ondra Renda' from the movie 'Thazhuvatha Kaigal' in Tamil.

5. Kiliye Kiliye - Aa Raatri (1982)
Rocking song, which sure must have been fresh sounding at that time (Why, even now actually !). This song is one of my favorites for its Bass patterns.

6. Theeram Thedi - Unaru (1984)
From one of earliest Mani Ratnam Movie, this song is the Malayalam version of 'Roja Ondru' from Komberi Mookkan which also came in the same year. But look at the variation in the presentation of both songs. Listen to the M7th strums in the interludes. What a stylish sound. Compare it with equally powerful but simple rendition of 'Roja Ondru'. Would any one believe both are same melody.

7. Yamuna Theere - Yaathra (1985)
Its Balu Mahendra and hence another regulation Raaja stuff.

8. En Poove - Pappayude Swandam Appus (1992)
This song very closely resembles "Nee Dhaana" from "Thalattu padava" and yet this is a high quality Keeravani in its own right. Espeically very neatly done pallavi finishings by Janaki etc.,

9. Olathumbathirunnu - Pappayude Swandam Appus (1992)
I believe, This is one of those national anthem kind of songs again.. Early 90s was the time when he had a different color to his Strings. It used to create a free falling effect. Listen to Maasi Maasam, Chromatic descents of Finishers in Oh Butterfly, Re-recording of many movies in this time frame such as Nadodi Thendral, Veera etc., Just like the interlude of this song.

Now for the biggie..

10. ThazhampooThaalil - Oomakkuyil (1983)
Balu Mahendra again. There are two unforgivable things about this song. Number one, many many Hard core Raaja fans from Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and rest of India is not aware of this song. Number two, YG Mahendran was the hero in this song :-).

I simply didn't have the heart to edit this song and post only a portion of it.. Because whichever portion of the song I considered, it made a strong case to be the one. What to say of the bass parts of this song..? or the guitar solo in 2nd interlude.. Another testimony to Janaki's inimitable talent of rendering almost impossible things in a way making others look useless. Listen to the feel through out this song.. and the voice control (especially places like finishing of Pallavi) If you are an aspiring singer on one of those TV shows, please attempt such songs. If you can reproduce this emotion with no tinge of artificiality and this level of voice control + note sense as effortlessly, then the trophy is yours.

Hope you liked the guided tour of God's Own Country !

With Love
Vicky

  3. Regarding Thumbi Vaa: The song first appeared in a Tamil movie(the name of which escapes me)starring Vijayakanth and very fair heroine. ( I and my sister used to kid each other saying it was a colour black & white film).

Coming back to the song, the words went some thing like this:

    Thamizh Sangathil Kanatha Kavithai
    Un Angathil yaar vaithathu...

BTW, Ilayaraaja mostly rehashed his Tamil songs in Malayalam movies.

I make this earlier comment not to defame his genius but to put facts straight.

If it is of any interest to your readers, I am an ardent Raja fan and a Malayali to boot.:)

    Cheers!

  4. As always a great post. And yes, you have introduced me to this hreat song "Thazhampoo". cant thank you enough for that.

And is Veene Veene in Mohana?

Even Theeram Thedi (Unaroo) is an often neglected composition and people talk a lot about "Roja Ondru".In my opinion, the orchestration in Theeram Thedi is far more spellbinding than in Roja Ondru.

Small correction: Unaroo was by Maniratnam and not Balu Mahendra. It was Maniratnam's 2nd film after "Pallavi Anupallavi" and it had Mohan Lal in lead role.

  6. Vicky,

You beat me to it :) In another forum I had mentioned that if I were to give up every other film music I would do that provided I was given a dozen songs of what Raja did in Malayalam!! I though I would post what I consider as some of my favorite songs in Malayalam. Nice to see your post on a similar topic here.

Each of the songs you have posted is a gem. Is there a Jesudas solo of 'poo vadikalil'? I have heard a duet (It had Janaki but not sure if the male voice is Jesudas or Jeyachandran.) Can't agree more about 'tanal virikan'.

I have to confess that I too have not heard 'Thazhampoo'. I though I had most of Raja's songs in Malayalam. With Raja you learn new things everyday :)

Saravan, at Dhool.com, had done a lovely series of articles on S.Janaki's contribution to Malayalam Film Music. The link below gives his take on S.Janaki with Raja in Malayalam. Well written set of articles.

  7. Vicky,

Agree with you on 'poovadikalil' sounding like a Hindi melody. Reminded me of the Kalyani that Roshan did for 'zindagi bar nahin boolenge'. Of course the tunes are no where similar. It is just that feel of Kalyani. BTW, 'Policekaran Magal' on which 'Vyamoham' was based also had a lovely Kalyani based number, 'indha manrathil odi varum.' Janaki was involved in this as well!!

Thanks Usha.. Post porumaiya padichi/ Kettu sollunga..

    @ Logesh:
I don't deserve your kind words. Thanks a lot for your comment and glad to know that you liked the post.

    @ Ottayan:
    Yes. Thumbi Vaa's original may have been Auto Raja's Sangathil. It was also used as "Sunday Tho" in the unreleased Balu mahendra's movie 'Aur Ek Prem Kahani'. And Thumbi Vaa itself was dubbed as "Neer Veezhchi" in Tamil (Kanne Kalaimaane) and "Aakasam" in Telugu (Nirikshana I think);

    Regarding your statement:
    //
BTW, Ilayaraaja mostly rehashed his Tamil songs in Malayalam movies.
I make this earlier comment not to defame his genius but to put facts straight.
    //
This could be true as far as Dubbed/ remade movies of Tamil movies are conerned. But if you are taking about original Malayalam movies, This is not true. Because I have every single Mallu Movie of Raaja and I don't think there are any repetitions there from Tamil. Even songs like "Vaazhiteludhiya " (Onnanu Nammal) is the original which was later re-used in Kamal blockbuster Enakkul Oruvan as "Ther Kondu sendravan"; So I am fairly certain his Tamil numbers are not re-hashed in Malayalam barring a few here and there; If you are talking about dubbed movies, then obviously it doesn't count because as you may have known, Raaja is not even involved in their recordings as its his assistants who do it. In any case, please please give the songs that you know which are original Tamil songs that are rehashed in original Malayalam movies (and not in their dubbed/remade counterparts). I am certainly curious to know if there are any.

    @ Aakarash:
Thanks a lot for the correction man. I corrected the post :-); Yes Veene Veene is Mohanam based (although you can hear Bass descending down on Nishadam even in pallavi); Interlude/ Stanza is clearly more of Sankarabharanam with generous usage of Ma and Ni..

    @ Suresh:
Thanks once again. I just checked.. the other Poovadikalil is KJ/ SJ duet. Thanks for correcting. Beautiful article by Saravanan. Its more complete than my post because it also covers SJ's himalayan duets. thanks for the nice trivia that Vyamoham is a remake of "Policekaran Magal"; Yes the Kalyani flavor in Poovadaikalil is indeed unmistakable .. I think there is also a liberal dose of sudha madhyamam in that song.. But thats what make such tunes very alluring.

  9. Dear Vicky,

I am not very familiar with all of Raja's original work in Malayalam.

So I give you the example of a song in Achuvinte amma, 'Enthuparanjallum' which sounds suspiciously similar to 'Pachamara poovu'.

    Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Ottayan,

What you say about 'pachamala poovu' and 'endhu paranjalum' is true. The recent 'Allipoove Mallipoove' from 'Bhagyadevatha' pays homage to 'sendhurapoove'. Having said that, I fully concur with Vicky about Raja's tunes being original for most of the movies made in Malayalam. Be it the 80s or the 90s or the 2000s. He has infact not used as many Tamil songs in Malayalam as he has used them in Telugu, again due to director / producers insistence. Malayalam output of Raja has been very original indeed. Just three movie of the 90s can substantiate it. 'Oru Yathra Mozhi', 'Kalapani' and 'Guru'.

  11. When I listened recently to Thumbi Vaa ....I feel that it was not rehashed or redone for Telugu but merely dubbed. It seems that Balu Mahendra just picked up few songs from other languages and dubbed the songs in telugu for Nireekshana. So, purely from a composing standpoint, I would not count Aakasam song even though it had such a high impact.

I am awed by your musical knowledge and analysis on raja. Anyone who wants to understand intricacies of music and that too Raja should go thru your blogsite. I recently saw this article on the web which i thought should be shared with folks in your blogs and i dunno if you hv seen it. Especially on this note in this website (www.shaaji.com) -This note is about "thumbi vaa song" - To add insult to injury some websites has given the opinion that it is a copy of the song ‘Istanbul, Not Constantinople’ of the Canadian Pop Troupe, The Four Lads, released in 1953."

You may read the article on this website and make your comments. I am eager to see your comment.

  15. @ Balaji:
    I already read that article.

Firstly, My thoughts and comments are more on the absolute music that Raaja makes. Thats the only aspect I wish to focus on and not get involved in endorsing or denying any person. This is the reason I also stay from most of the Raaja Forums. I used to be active in few. But realized that, those are forums of ego clashes under the camoflouge of a discussion.

So I am not going to comment in any website.. But responding to you is much more important to me since you asked me :-). So I will do it right here..

Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. But when they present it as facts and unfortunately when people believe them, I think that is not correct. Having read this and other articles of this author, In my opinion he has a good prose. Thats where it stops. according to me his real music skills are rather shallow. Because where it concerns 'absolute music' I find his thoughts are beating around the bush and re-iterating only those "seemingly" technical info such as superfluously mentioning a song's ragam or refering to some technique. To me, thats not how musical review/ analysis should be. I always would like to deep dive. Because in this internet age, anyone can be (or atleast look like) a average musically educated person. But that is not enough to write about the musical side of someone who is more knowledgeable than you. Certainly not negative. Suppudu is Suppudu, because at least he thinks he is more knowledged than the artists whom he criticizes. And to some extent that is true as well...But I don't think thats the case with Shaaji and Raaja :-)

As far as his comments on Raaja's personality is concerned, its irrelevant to the title of that article which seem to suggest its about Raaja's musical side.

Coming to "Istanbul, Not Constantinople" and "Thumbi Vaa", I heard the former only now in youtube to see what is the similarity. The pattern of the first line of both songs infact bears some semblence. But thats where it ends.. The former is a "sa ga pa" construct in the melody with more of Mediterranean/ Eastern Europe arrangement (Thought I heard even some quarter notes.. Need to check again). Thumbi vaa is more of a "sa Ri Ga" construct and follows the line of carnatic Kaapi. The second line of Thumbi vaa with such a beautiful pegging at Ga3 should completely erase any traces of "Istanbul" song from anyone's mind even if someone dare thought that way..

For that matter, if I close my eyes and randomly think, another song immediately comes to my mind.. Listen to "Anbe Vaa.. Anbennum Venba" from the movie "Dharma Seelan".. The firstline construct is exactly similar to "Thumbi Vaa" and "Istanbul".. But can you feel any similarity? None.. whatsoever.... If you give me one day, I bet I can come up with atleast a half a dozen more song with this construct.. Does this mean all of them are copied from one another..? Or the melody of the word "Istanbul" is exactly same as the words "Naan Aanai ittaaal..." So why don't we say MSV was also inspired by this band.. :-) ?

I think this is Chicken brain thinking.. I am reminded of a cartoon about Bush. In that he would be saying, "Hey..! Finally I found the connection between Al-Qaeda and IraQ" and he would be pointing at the alphabet 'Q' in both the letters.. You get the point ..?

  18. Vicky,

In a different forum I had said that the article lacked basic honesty and that is a fact. As you rightly said, some things need a deep dive and music is one such subject. No use worrying about what every Tom, Dick and Shaji says about Raja. What will remain is his music while such absurd criticism will be laughed at by future generations.

  19. Vicky,

Your blog is excellent and informative.I am also a hardcore fan of Raja.

The selected songs of Janaki are very nice. She is delight of Raja.
But Janaki was well used by Raja"s Guru"s before.Raja would have experienced it before using her in his compositions.

    Below are her superb songs:-
    ”காற்றுக்கென்ன வேலி”-அவர்கள்
    (Very rich orchestration.Humming is amazing!)
    ”உன்னிடத்தில் என்னை”-அவளுக்கென்று ஓர் மனம்”
    (superb 3rd interlude-மங்களகரமான நாதஸ்வரம் + தவில் and its transition to sitar?+tabla)

    Is it sindhu bhairavi?

    "நினைத்தால் போதும் பாடுவேன்”-நெஞ்சிருக்கும்வரை
    excellent orchestration.

Raja would have got definitely impacted by this song because this Hamsanandhi based inspired him in "வாழ்கை ஒடம் செல்ல”-அவள் அப்படித்தான்.

You can see the resemblence but raja"s orchestration shows is different.

    Her minus is "கீச்” அண்ட் “மழலை”.

Her poor Mumbai cousin is Asha Bhosle. Why poor cousin?

    "செண்ப”ஹ”மே...செண்ப”ஹ”மே

    ”ம”லை” மேகம்

    Thanks vicky.

Thanks a lot...Glad to know that you saw my point in the lyrical meter of Thumbi Vaa matching Anbe Vaa.. In fact I had fun (personally) singing the lyrics of Thumbi Vaa to Anbe vaa and vice versa.. Try it out... It will be cool..

But the fact remains that, some hasty minds with no insight into music listen to Thumbi vaa, and finds the pattern of first 3 notes matching Istanbul and writing some non-sense and it becomes a 'Truth' in the internet. This is indeed sorry state of affairs of our times..

  26. 'Sangathil' from Auto Raja is not the original of this outstanding tune. The Malayalam version 'Thumbi vaa' from Olangal is definitely the original. Olangal is year 1982 and Auto Raja is 1983. The Music Director of Auto Raja is not Ilayaraja, but it is Shankar Ganesh. Raja sir was asked to do this song alone in Auto Raja since the producers were crazy about this tune.

The chronological history of this tune is as follows:

    1. Thumbi vaa (Olangal - 1982) - Malayalam

    2. Aakasham enatidho (Nireekshana - 1983) - Telugu

    3. Sangathil Paadatha Kavidhai (Auto Raja - 1983) - Tamil

    4. Neer Veezhchi thee mootudhae (Kanne Kalaimaane - 1988) - Tamil

    5. Monday To Uth Kar (Aur Ek Prem Kahani - 1995) - Hindi

    6. Gum sum gum (Paa - 2009) - Hindi
