Discover Chithra

She announced her arrival in to the Tamil Film Music with a century on debut ("Chinna Kuyil Paadum Paattu").. And then "Paadariyane" fetched her the national award.. There after "Edhedo Ennam Valarthane" found an irreplaceable place in many a hearts.. Later "Ninnukkori Varnam" + Chithra (+ Amala :-P !!) took everyone by Storm.. "Kuzhaloodhum Kannanukku" established her as a 'Jana Ranjaka' singer.. "Devanin Kovil" became a bench mark song for orchestras all over TN thanks to her (and ofcourse Maestro's chorus) even though the song was not otherwise much visible.. "Aathadi Ammadi" presented a different dimension of this great singer..

The problem with such overpowering songs is that, people are arrested at that level and usually the other songs of quality doesn't stand a chance.. Therefore I have this "Discover series", A theme which is recurring in my iPod playlist for all mainstream singers. Chances that these songs captivated you are unlikely unless you are a regular Raaja follower. [Infact all the songs that I specified in the first paragraph are part of my another theme collection namely 'Signature' series for all singers. But its no use blogging about them as those are the routine 'Hit' songs which define a singer's career from the general public's point of view].

The following songs are not necessarily 'unheard'. But of those category that you could vaguely remember them but couldn't recall beyond the first 2 lines of pallavi while the song deserved much more than that from you.. In short, These songs are neither common nor rare. So here I start with some superb songs of Chinna Kuyil Chitra that are usually shown the cold shoulders

1. Vaanam Thodadha Megam - Chinnappa Das

2. Pazhya Kanavai Thedi - Thayamma

3. Oru Pachai Kodi - Mannan (or is it Innisai Mazhai ..?)

4. Ullasa Poongaatre - Kolangal (This song is also found in another playlist of mine called 'Lounge Music' which would be blogged later)

5. Oru Raaja Vandharam - Mounam Sammadham

6. Then Madurai Seemaiyile - Thangamana Raasa

7. Uchimalai Megangal - Vellaya Thevan

8. En Raaja Yaaro - Paarthal Pasu

9. Unnai Naane - Chinna Kuyil Paatu (This song is a best kept secret. Another of those Raaja's experiments where he conceals some notes in a scale deliberately to totally bring about another Raaga's bhavam. This song deserves an exclusive post.. may be later..)

10. Kaalai Nera Raagame - Raasave Unnai Nambi (Absolutely brilliant rendition..)

11. Maalai Soodum - Pudhiya Raagam.

12. Then Podigai Kaatre - Poomani

13. Pattu Poo Poo - Veera (Aerobics in Chala Naattai ..?? !! Tone of Chithra during "Paarkkum Paarvaigal" in Charanam is like a square lead.. flabbergasting.. )

I would like to single out 2 songs that should have made the above list but didn't. Because they are quite some high quality songs and somehow I feel they should have been in the 'overpowering' league and not in this list .. And they are:

Vaanam paadi - Sir I Love you (One the very best Shanmuga Priyas of Raaja And Chitra is simply at her best in this one)

Santhosham Idhu - Manidhanin Marupakkam (This song has that magical gift of making you cheerful anytime of the day...)

To round up, there are also songs such as "Kotti Kidakkudhu" ('Theertha karaiyinile', which I am sure she sang with a sore throat). And then there are not so popular Chithra numbers in the classical genre as well.. Such as "Manam Pola" ('Pudhupatti Ponnuthayee', which I also mentioned in my Pannaiya Bagavadhar post..) and "ArulKan Paarvai" from Aanazhagan..

Think about Western Classical and there is Sound of music-ish "Mazhalai Endrum Maradha" (Sethupathi IPS).. How much more such wasted worthies.. !!?? Sigh..

With Love
Vicky

  3. It is cliche to say "Good Post".

I have always liked Chitra's "Completeness of voice" and to admit, I actually prefer her vocal quality over legendary Janaki's vocal quality. However, while my knowledge of chitra's good songs was very limited, you broadened it with the songs you have got...when you played them out for me, when i visited your place. Infact i really miss those interactions with you and would like to have more, if you permit :)

Coming to the songs you mentioned here, The songs you spoke about in the paragraph are nuggets anyways. i listen to them frequently and they come in the same order in which you played them to me :).

    No, coming to this list:

    1. Vaanam thodatha - Is it pick pocket? or Chinnappa Das? well, this song was much ahead of its times. it is a classic.

    2. Pazhya Kanavai Thedi - it is actually a IR-susheela brand of song. the violin interludes made me open "Karpoora bommai" for some strange reason.

    3. Pru Pachai Kodi - typical IR-chitra. if IR removes the vocals and gives the song to me, asking"Suggest a singer", i would say "c'mon..i know you already made up your mind".

    4. Ullaasa Poongatre - I am sorry, though chitra shines, IR's orchestration distracts (or attracts) me more. Yet to reach a stage where i can look beyond IR's genius and concentrate solely on singer.

    5. Oru Raaja Vandhaaram - Same theory as song# 3 above.

    6. Themadhura seema - this is the song i would like to show as example, to observe the difference between chitra's completeness in voice and Janaki's shrillness. replace Janaki here and the song goes for a toss.

    7. Uchi Malai - Notice the 1st line of the song..is it not same as "Chinna kuyiln paadum paattu" minus "ku ku ku kooo". well, rest all is different..but then..while making this (or that), he must have decided the singer for the other one too.

    8. En raasa yaaro - IR + folk+ chitra in that order.

    9. Unnai Naane - This is one of my alltime favs. infact, even this should be in "overpowering league". waiting for your exclusive post.

    10. kaalai nera raagame - Complete. Chitra... but look at that bass-work.

    11. Maalai Soodum - This song is new to me, yet to listen.

    12. Then podigai katre - New one again.
    13. Pattu Poo - you said it right.

and "Kotti Kidakkudhu" has traces of Vani Jayram's voice.

and Vaanam paadi and "Sonthosham Idhu" are nuggets again. I wish to draw your attention to one more song "Indha Vennila" from "December Pookal".

and there are many more too...if we consider duets..like "Va Va Va Kannaava" (Velaikkaran).

Sorry for blogging in your comments section ;)

  4. Thoondaamani vilakku thoondaamani nindreriyum from Vaazhka valarka. Such a haunting folk composition. IMO, it is a corresponding song for Devanin kovil moodiya neeram. Each decibel of this song had been filled with melancholic feel. It would change de ambience gloomy and folky for sure since Kummi pattu at 1st interlude and Raaja sir sings as cart-rider at 2nd interlude. Impeccable contribution of Chitra and Raaja sir's astonishing melody retain de song well-groomed and spick-&-span even after 2 decades. You bet! Except de title song of this movie, other songs were penned by Raaja sir itself!

Sir, any chance of Sivaranjani raaga's scale in this song?

  5. Sir,

I was kept on humming de song - Thoondaamani vilakku thoondaamani nindreriyum and tirelessly end up with Paadariyen padipariyen. However, I could not make up my mind blindly that this song could be based on Saramathi. Just out of curiosity, I am wanting to know any particular mishra raga in this song as being a cinematic folk song. Thanks in advance!

  6. Good post Vicky.

Siru Kootile from Paandi Naatu Thangam is another great Chithra number. This song follows what I term as 'melody based rhythm' - multiple thala nadais are used and the rhythm closely follows the main melody - I am not sure if I am using the right term.

Another great number of Chithra - Hey Chithira from En Bommukutty Ammuvukku. Phenomenal singing.

  7. @ Aakarsh: Thanks for the mini blog.. Agree with your point on the tonal purity of Janaki vs Chithra..

@ Kamalnath: Thanks for introducing me to such a wonderful song.. It reminded me of "Paadadha Themmangu" (Poonthotta Kavalkaran) at first hearing.. Also shades of Siva ranjani with Chinna ni is evident in the BGMs/ stanzas.. (same as that of Kuyil paattu oh...) I don't think this song has Strong Saramathi flavors.. the resemblance with Paadariyane could be merely due to the strong minor base of both the songs I guess...
@ Ravinat: Yes.. Melody based Rhythm are hidden freebies in Raaja songs.. I wrote a lengthy article on this topic (Citing the examples of Aracha santhanam, Alolangili etc., in the Ilaiyaraaja Yahoo groups few years back..)

    With Love
